World Obesity Day 2022: “Everybody Needs to Act”

Obesity is a significant public health challenge, and there are currently 800 million people living with the disease worldwide, some with limited access to healthcare, and many more at risk. The only way to make a change is by working together. The World Obesity Federation, in collaboration with global members, uses World Obesity Day as a way to raise awareness and call for action at a local, national and global level.

touchENDOCRINOLOGY spoke to two of our valued editorial board members, Dr Osama Hamdy (Joslin Diabetes Center, Boston, MA, USA) and Professor Jeffrey Mechanick (Mount Sinai Hospital, New York, NY, USA). They shared their expert opinion on the current state of the obesity epidemic and some significant advances over the last few years, which help steer us in the right direction for change.

Dr Osama Hamdy

“Our perceptions about weight management and its options dramatically changed over the last 2 years. First, we started to see significant number of patients with obesity succeed in losing weight and maintaining weight loss for up to 10 years in real-world clinical practice. Second, we started to see newer medications that may help patients to lose 15% or more of their initial body weight over a year.

We also started to believe that 10-15% of weight loss may lead to type 2 diabetes into remission, especially within the first 5 years of diagnosis.

Moreover, we started to see more popularity of low-carbohydrates eating patten and intermittent and timed-fasting as successful methods of weight reduction”.

Researchers now believe that maintaining muscle mass during weight loss by increasing protein intake and doing strength exercise is the key to long-term maintenance of weight loss.”

Professor Jeffrey I Mechanick MD

“Obesity is now re-interpreted as a chronic disease that on the one hand should be prevented as early as possible on population scales, and on the other hand recognized as a driver of cardiovascular disease and many other chronic diseases, furthering the mandate for structured lifestyle medicine and concerted action by all healthcare professionals.”
